Obtaining Data

ACH Universal > First Steps > Obtaining Data

Overview

Obtaining data is actually the first step in the process of creating an ACH file and it happens outside ACH Universal.  The data represents transactions: for example, paying employees or paying vendors.  These transactions can be exported to a file through the accounting system or you can create the file using a report writer (for example, Crystal Reports or Hyperion).  The most important issue is the file format.

Proper File Format

The data can be in any tabular-format.  By definition, a tabular format is one where the data is in columns and may or may not include headers.  The most popular choices for these files are:

Excel spreadsheet (.xls/.xlsx)
Access database (.mdb/.mdbx)
Comma-separate values (.csv)
Tab-delimited (.txt)
Fixed-width text

This is by no means an exhaustive list, but these are the most popular choices as they are easy to generate.

You do not need to manually remove column headers, blank rows, footers, or summary information as ACH Universal will correctly process the transactions and ignore extraneous information.

Before importing the files (whether transactions or payee profiles), make sure you create an account to hold the data.
