Please use the following steps to download and install Microsoft 2016 SQL Server Express.
The first step is to download SQL Server 2016 from the following link:
http://www.treasurysoftware.com/setup/SQLServer2016-SSEI-Expr.exe
The second step is to run the executable and select the Basic installation.
The third step is to select 'Accept' to the Windows Software License Agreement.
Click 'Install'.
Please make note of your instance name and then click 'Customize'.
Click 'Next'.
Click 'Next'.
Click to 'Accept' the Windows License Agreement then click 'Next'.
Click 'Next'.
Select the 'Default instance' and then 'Next'.
Click 'Next'.
Now select 'Mixed Mode' and 'Next'.
Congratulations, you are now done with installing Microsoft 2016 SQL Server Express. Click 'Close'.
From within Treasury Software, click on the Settings tab > Migrate to SQL Express, SQL Server.
Click Next on the first screen and then select the name of your database instance on the dropdown leaving the 'Check if SQL Express' checkbox unchecked. Click 'Next'.
Next, select the 'I have a separate SQL Server login ID and password' radio button and enter your login credentials.
Lastly, click 'Next' then 'Finish'.
Troubleshooting:
If you cannot connect to the SQL Express database from a remote machine, it is probably due to the Windows Firewall. Please see the following link.

If the connection issue is not due to a firewall, check the Services panel to see if SQL Server Browser is running (may need to start it). To access the Services panel, go into the Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.
If you can connect from a of copy of Treasury Software that is local to the server, but not from a remote computer you may need to make sure that remote connections is enabled. You will need to download and install SSMS (SQL Server Management Services). Then start SSMS, click on the server, then select connections and make sure that remote connections is checked (see screen shot SSMS – Remote Connections).
